Chapter Twenty-One

LYSANDER

Maisie was quiet the whole ride home, gripping the door handle like she expected me to veer off the road into the trees. But, then again, this was her second trip in a car ever apparently, so maybe that was all that kept her staring out the window, away from me.

“Did you two have fun, Kymari?” I asked as I glanced in my rear view mirror at her, taking the exit for Deadlights Cove.

Kymari didn’t look any more relaxed than Maisie, her hand wrapped tightly around Dillon’s forearm in a crushing grip. “Do you have to drive so fast? The speed limit sign back there said 55 and I can see your speedometer. 58 is not 55.”

Dillon snorted, his eyes meeting mine in the mirror momentarily, but did nothing about her hand on his arm.

“Apologies,” I said as I slowed the car marginally, hovering right at the posted 55. Normally, I’d have said something snarky in return, but I couldn’t focus on anything other than how Maisie was avoiding me. Had been avoiding me ever since I’d hopped off the stage.

As we entered town, I slowed, pulling around the square and down our street, headlights flashing over the many houses that had the lights out, already asleep for the night at just past midnight. I slowed to a crawl as my house came into view, noticing the lights glaring from the windows inside.

Someone was home, and only one person had the key to our house other than those in the car right now.

“Uh,” Dillon said, noticing the same thing. “Did we know Ostara would be here tonight?”

Maisie swung her head towards me, eyes meeting mine as my fingers tightened on the steering wheel. “Your mother is at your house?”

My teeth clenched tightly as I pulled into the drive, seeing her imposing silhouette even now through the open blinds. A deep sigh left me as I parked and threw open the door. At the last second, I remembered to circle the car and open Maisie’s door for her, linking my fingers through hers as we moved up the driveway.

“You okay?” she whispered, gaze focused so heavily on me she missed the step up onto the stoop.

I stopped, reaching to steady her as Maisie closed her eyes, sucking in a deep frustrated breath, then let the tension go. “One bumbling giraffe girlfriend, ready to meet your mother,” she said with a forced smile. “Maybe I tripped now, and won’t embarrass myself in front of her. Though my clumsiness is not limited to only one fall per day, so that’s unlikely.”

A laugh rose in me, my lips tugging into a smile as I reached across and kissed her temple. She tensed slightly under my touch, and I couldn’t say exactly why I’d done it.

On stage, I’d wanted so desperately to make her feel better, to help her let loose, that I’d said those things effortlessly. I couldn’t deny it had felt good to see the way she reacted to my words, my song choice, and to sell our relationship status in a very public manner.
